No fewer than six Top Eliminator teams brought surplus aircraft engines to Detroit. Art Arfons was all smiles during Wally Parks’s trophy presentation for top speed (172.08 mph), not suspecting that the popular, patriotic warbird V-12s had made their final NHRA Nationals appearance. Ironically, banning the likes of the Green Monster from open competition created a real monster: the exhibition vehicle. Art and stepbrother Walt became the biggest beneficiaries, replacing worthless trophies with cash appearance guarantees.
