The HOT ROD staff takes a look back at the magazine's favorite issues over the past 60 years.
The cover of the December 1967 issue of HOT ROD featured Corvette hero Zora Arkus-Duntov. The Chevrolet executive was seated among a group of experimental Chevy powerplants, over a banner headline screaming, "Inside Chevy's Secret Engines!" The factory mystery motors included a SOHC 427 and a 327 with three-valve heads, written up in a closely worded tech story by editor Jim McFarland.
Other big stories in December '67: a road test of AMC's '68 Javelin, this one a 343 automatic; Smokey Yunick's slippery '67 Camaro Trans-Am racer; Doug Thorley’s Corvair Funny Car; and Don Garlits’ “comeback” victory at the ’67 U.S. Nationals in Indy. A tech feature by John Thawley showed how to shove a big-block Chevy into a ’57 to ’62 Corvette, complete with fabricated engine mounts and clutch linkage, while Eric Rickman’s color center spread featured Ron Tourt’s 181 mph hemi drag boat. In Hot Rod Mart there’s a clean little ’32 Ford five-window coupe with Caddy V-8 power for $1500.
