Canadian Automotive Trade July 1923: “G. M . TRUCKS TO BE BUILT IN CANADA Following closely on the formation of the Cadillac Motor Car Co. of Canada Limited comes the announcement of another new company, the General Motors group now includes Canadian companies for the following cars and trucks: McLaughlin-Buick, CHEVROLET, OLDSMOBILE, Oakland, Cadillac and General Motors Trucks. The new company will handle the distribution of G. M. C. Trucks for the entire Dominion. H. H. Henchall, the new sales manager, has had a long experience in Motor Truck transportation. He has for many years been associated with the motor truck industry in the capacities of branch manager and service executive.” G.M.C. Trucks started production in 1923, 55 being built, and only 162 were built in 1924, which suggests that the G.M.C. Northway UNITs were imported direct, perhaps with ancillaries to be fitted at Walkerville, though the lack of volume surely precluded any “C.K.D.” operations to save on import Duty? Canadian G.M.C. truck production figures were hardly considerable up until 1927: ALL THESE WERE ASSEMBLED IN OSHAWA 1923 55 1924: 162 1925: 182 1926: 152 but then leapt: 1927: 410 1928: 2,739! With the opening of the new G.M.C. Truck Plant at Oshawa. The truck sales company was General Motors Truck Company of Canada Limited, but after Yellow acquired General Motors Truck Company of Pontiac, and G.M. then acquired a 60% stake in Yellow, the Canadian truck company became GENERAL MOTORS TRUCK & COACH COMPANY OF CANADA LIMITED [by 1927 to coincide with the new Oshawa G.M.C. Plant: see below], to mirror the US counterparts of G.M.C. Truck and Yellow Bus and Coach in one company. However in 1927 the Adverts were by Truck and Coach Division, General Motors Products of Canada Limited. By 1925, the Northway motor had become known simply as a truck motor, with G.M.C. Truck becoming its only customer, so that any G.M.C.’s built in 1925 [182!] had motors imported from the former Northway plant. In mid-1925, the once proud Northway Motor and Manufacturing Division was transferred out from under the Inter Company Parts Group to direct operation and control under the G.M. Truck Division, much as CP Ltd. were to General Motors of Canada. But this was short-lived, because after Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing Company purchased and acquired the G.M. Truck Division in September 1925, the Northway division was quietly disbanded and discontinued by March 1926. By March 1926, the Northway property in Detroit, which was by then called G.M. Truck Plant No. 7, was purchased by CHEVROLET Motor Division for the manufacture of front and rear axles and parts for past model CHEVROLETs. With the closure of the former Northway Plant, motor production switched to the Pontiac, Michigan plant, however in 1927 for 1928 Model Year there was a significant change in motor installation. Even so, castings were still bought in for Oakland, Pontiac and G.M.C. L-head engines. These were supplied by FERRO, and carried their casting mark. This continued only until early in 1929, when the Pontiac Foundry came on stream. This Gray Iron Foundry was built from the Fall of 1928, and went into production the next year, located near the Pontiac assembly plant, and its adjacent Fisher Body plant, so that all operations were effectively on one site. Apart from the Pontiac motors, GMC Trucks used Buick UNITs of both series and then GMC, Pontiac and OLDSMOBILE L-head UNITs and CHEVROLET o.h.v. UNITs at various times. Buick Standard 257 cu. in. in-line 6 with 4 mains bearings had 3 7/16 x 4 7/8 in. bore & stroke, first produced by GMC in the US on 8/1/30. 221, 239 and 286 cu. in. engines were later versions. Buick Master 331 cu. in. “6” with 4 main bearings and 3¾ x 5 in. bore & stroke was first produced by GMC in the US on 8/6/30. 400 and 450 cu. in. engines were later versions.
Canadian Motorist November 1927 showed the new TRUCK BUILDING UNIT, part of the $2.5 million Canadian Plant Extension Program at Oshawa "Now Well Under Way" opened when President R.S. McLaughlin drove the first General Motors Truck off the new assembly line: probably a GMC T.40. Expansion would add 10,000 to population of Oshawa. These were evidently not CHEVROLETs, but GMC trucks as they had chrome radiators, bumpers, and twin rear wheels.
