FIA CATEGORIES, GROUPS & CLASSES
The FIA record an automobile will compete in is defined by the combination it's category, group and class, then the distance to be covered and finally the type of start it with perform.
For example a "BI 16 1Km FS" record translates to;
"a one kilometre flying start record for a series production otto powered petrol burning supercharged automobile of 5000 to 5500 cc capacity"

CATEGORIES

There are many different types of World Records which are divided into four main categories (A, B, C & D) and then several Group & Class sub-divisions within those categories.

Category A: Automobiles answering exclusively to the standards fixed in Article D1.1.1, using free fuel and divided into groups and classes according to Articles D1 and D18.
Category B: Series-production Automobiles in production at the time of the application for the Record Attempt and certified to be a production representative model by a senior executive of the automobile manufacturer.
Category C: Special Automobiles (jet, rocket, etc.).
Category D: Drag race Automobiles complying with the FIA Drag Racing regulations
